First Pre-Dialysis kidney transplant Performed In San Luis

WORLD NEWS – ARGENTINA: A multidisciplinary medical team in San Luis carried out a unique kidney transplantation on a patient who had not yet begun dialysis, part of a program designed to intervene at the late stages of renal insufficiency to avoid dialysis initiation. The procedure is described as the first of its kind in the province, aimed at giving patients an alternative trajectory before chronic renal replacement therapy becomes mandatory.

The intervention grew out of a targeted assistance program that follows patients who are approaching the need for dialysis. Clinicians provided individualized monitoring and prepared the patient and family with the explicit goal of avoiding entry into dialysis. That clinical strategy made transplantation the centerpiece of care, moving the operation from a last resort to a proactive treatment option.

Preparation and execution underscored the scale and coordination required for such a transplant. More than 20–30 professionals participated in the lead-up and the operation itself: a nephrology unit of four physicians, a group of six to eight nurses, four to five surgeons, surgical technologists, psychologists, social workers and biochemistry staff. The team emphasized how tightly articulated the effort was, with numerous roles integrated so smoothly that the sheer size of the crew was easy to overlook amid the clinical focus.

Hospital and program leaders framed the case as both a technical milestone and a model of patient-centered care for the region, demonstrating how early referral and coordinated multidisciplinary work can make transplantation a realistic option before dialysis becomes necessary. The success of this approach positions San Luis’s program as a potential template for other centers managing advanced renal insufficiency and seeking to expand preemptive transplantation efforts.
