Physicians found that her husband, Virginia Beach Fire Captain Neil Williams, is a compatible living donor and that roughly 60 percent of his liver can be transplanted to restore her liver function.

The Williamses, married for 20 years, say Casey’s health struggles have included autoimmune hepatitis, bile duct complications and a prior gallbladder removal. Those chronic problems led surgeons to recommend transplantation as the best pathway to improve her long-term health and quality of life.

Surgeons at UVA reviewed both partners’ scans and tests and determined Neil’s liver offers the appropriate size, texture and function for the transplant.
