Double Lung Transplant Gives Barb of Iowa New Lease on Life: A Christmas Miracle

In a poignant tale of perseverance and hope, DeMoine resident Barb Henan celebrates what she calls a Christmas miracle – a double lung transplant that finally frees her from the confines of her oxygen tank. This long-awaited transformation comes after four years of anticipation, marking a significant turning point in her life. Since 2020, Barb relied on supplemental oxygen to breathe, but her condition did not deter her spirit or her love for exercise. She even participated in the Ragbrai, a long-distance cycling event, with an oxygen tank in tow.

Barb’s medical journey took a decisive turn in early December when she found herself consuming more oxygen than usual. Responding to this critical sign, she contacted the University of Iowa Hospitals. Her proactive decision led to a breakthrough the next morning when hospital staff delivered life-changing news: a matching donor was available. The intricate science of lung matching, involving size and compatibility, finally aligned in Barb’s favor, granting her the gift of life and mobility.

Her determination and resilience shine through as she embarks on a new chapter post-surgery. No longer tethered to an oxygen tank, Barb eagerly anticipates engaging in activities she once cherished, like evening walks she used to take. The ongoing pulmonary rehabilitation process in Iowa City is a part of her recovery, focusing on reteaching her lungs the natural rhythm of breath.

Although Barb has been advised to sit out of next year’s Ragbrai event to allow for sufficient healing, her sights are firmly set on returning in 2026, stronger and revitalized. Her story is one of perseverance, illustrating the profound impact of medical advancements in transplantation surgery and the indomitable human spirit.
