Shoe Designer John Fluevog Receives Life-Saving kidney transplant From Longtime Friend

WORLD NEWS – CANADA: Shoe designer John Fluevog says months of fatigue and naps led to tests that confirmed advanced kidney disease and a need for life-saving transplant surgery. The diagnosis, he learned, reflected a reality facing tens of thousands of Canadians with kidney failure.

Fluevog was fortunate to reconnect with an old friend, Patti Carmichael, who stepped forward as a living donor and proved to be a compatible match. The pair underwent transplantation, and one year after the operation both are reported to be doing well, with Fluevog expressing profound gratitude for the gift of renewed health.

The case comes amid a national shortfall of living donors. Megan Owen Evans with the kidney Foundation warns there is an urgent need for more people to consider donation: more than 50,000 Canadians are living with kidney failure, while just over 4,000 await solid organ transplants and more than 70% of those on the list are seeking kidneys.

Fluevog’s experience underscores how living donation can change outcomes for people facing dialysis and long waits. Medical professionals and advocacy groups continue to urge public education and timely conversations about transplantation and living donation as critical steps to reduce wait lists and save lives.
