Logan Boule’s Donor Decision Inspires Green Shirt Day Push To Boost Organ Transplant Registrations

WORLD NEWS – CANADA: The sixth annual Green Shirt Day campaign launched with a stark reminder that more than 4,000 Canadians remain on organ transplant waiting lists and roughly 250 people per year lose their lives while waiting. Organ transplantation and donor registration are the central focus of the nationwide effort, which aims to turn expressed willingness into completed registrations and faster access to life-saving organs, particularly kidneys.

The campaign draws its momentum from the story of Lethbridge’s Logan Boule, who was among 16 people taken in a bus crash nearly eight years ago. Shortly before that crash, on his 21st birthday, Boule signed an organ donor card; his decision enabled transplants that helped six people and sparked a surge of interest in donor registration. In the two months following the tragedy, the movement associated with his legacy inspired nearly 150,000 Canadians to register as organ donors, a response organizers call the Logan Boule effect.

Organ donation advocates say awareness alone is not enough. Campaign organizer Joyce Van Deren highlighted a persistent gap: while surveys show about 90% of Canadians say they would consider organ donation, fewer than half have actually completed official registration. With more than 70% of those on waiting lists seeking kidneys, the campaign emphasizes prompt registration to improve transplantation outcomes and shorten waiting times for those in urgent need.

The Green Shirt Day rollout includes a new visual identity and community events that keep the conversation about organ donation and transplantation visible and accessible. To mark the annual day, the Boule family will host a free public skate at the Logan Boule Arena on April 7 from 4:30 to 6:30 p.m., continuing a public-facing legacy intended to nudge conversations and registrations across Canada.
