Beloved Minnesota Father’s Organ Donation Enables Partial heart transplant For Six-Year-Old
USA: When 35-year-old Steven Clerkin died unexpectedly in March from a brain aneurysm, his decision to be an organ donor set in motion a chain of care that saved multiple lives. Clerkin’s organs were recovered through a coordinated procurement process with LifeSource and medical teams, and his heart tissue was used in a rare partial heart transplant for a six-year-old child.
The partial heart transplantation procedure is a novel option in pediatric care, with only about 70 donors nationwide contributing to its development. Surgeons say the approach can take the place of a full heart transplant for some children and reduce the number of operations they must endure, improving long-term outcomes for young recipients.
Clerkin’s family initially wrestled with the choice to honor his donor registration. After meeting with LifeSource staff and learning about recipients’ stories, his brother Jason and partner Courtney came to view donation as a legacy. Hospital staff held an honor walk and other rituals that reflected Clerkin’s life as a devoted father and Vikings fan before procurement proceeded.
The gift has offered the family a measure of solace while underscoring a broader need: more than 2,300 Minnesotans remain on transplant waiting lists. For Jason and their daughters, Clerkin’s contribution means a part of him continues to give life, and his loss has inspired renewed advocacy for organ donation.
