Retired Deputy Finds Life-Saving Kidney Match After Years of Waiting, Transplant Date Set

Retired Escambia County Deputy Rudy Brown has spent years battling health complications, starting with a liver transplant in 2018 due to non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH). Though successful, the surgery caused kidney damage due to low blood pressure, leaving him with only 20% kidney function. By 2020, doctors confirmed he needed a kidney transplant. However, after getting listed at Sacred Heart, he was removed from the transplant list for five years after developing melanoma from anti-rejection medications. At the two-year mark, he was relisted and began dialysis while continuing his search for a donor.

Despite multiple people stepping forward after his story aired in June 2023, none were viable donors due to their own health conditions. Then came D. Carpenter, a man who had never considered organ donation before but felt compelled by Rudy’s story. Initially hesitant, Carpenter reached out to various hospitals to inquire about Rudy’s status. He went through rounds of testing, convinced his own health issues would disqualify him. But to his surprise, he was a perfect match—something he credits entirely to divine intervention.

Now, the long wait is finally over. The transplant is set for May 12, a date both men eagerly anticipate. Carpenter’s donation not only saves Rudy’s life but also helps another patient on the transplant list, as Rudy’s original spot will now go to the next person in need. Rudy looks forward to simple joys—fishing, playing with his grandkids, and enjoying more time with his family, all thanks to a stranger who answered the call to save a life.
