Two-Year-Old Receives Living kidney transplant From Stranger Inspired by Donor Family

USA: A desperate outreach for a child in Westland ended with a successful living kidney transplant at children‘s Hospital of Michigan on July 16. Two-year-old Luna Miller, who developed a rare congenital kidney condition that left both kidneys failing, had been dependent on nightly dialysis sessions lasting about ten hours. Her family, led by grandmother Connie Wyn, launched a public campaign to find a matched donor after relatives proved unable to donate.

The family’s appeals appeared across social media, flyers and local pizza boxes, and they maintained an online page dedicated to Luna’s search. Among those reached was Amber Fandry, who had been considering donation and was further motivated by her fiancé Sean’s earlier kidney donation. Amber submitted to evaluation at Henry Ford Health, was approved as a match, and stepped forward as a living donor.

Surgeons removed Amber’s kidney and transplanted it into Luna at the children’s hospital. The operation proceeded well, and both donor and recipient began recovery. Amber later received a photograph of her donated kidney placed in Luna, a moment the two families described as deeply meaningful. Medical staff highlighted the tangible life-changing impact of living donation for pediatric patients like Luna and emphasized how such gifts can restore everyday childhood activities.

Amber reports feeling the same physically after recovery and has stayed in touch with Luna’s family; the two families continue to exchange messages and plan to remain connected. Luna’s relatives expressed profound gratitude for the second chance afforded their daughter and for the ordinary milestones she may now enjoy. Hospital clinicians framed the case as an example of how community outreach and living donors can directly save lives and transform futures for children with organ failure.
