City Of Hope Celebrates 50 Years Of bone marrow Transplantation, Reuniting Donors And Recipients

USA: City of Hope in Duarte marked the 50th anniversary of its bone marrow transplant program with a reunion of survivors, donors and clinicians, drawing members of the more than 21,000 people who have been treated through the program. The gathering highlighted decades of medical progress and the human stories behind hematopoietic stem cell transplantation.

Among those honored was Rodrigo Núñez, diagnosed in 1978 with a rare blood disorder and flown a donor—his brother—from Mexico for an early, experimental transplant. Núñez is now recognized as the hospital’s longest-surviving bone marrow recipient, a living testament to the risks clinicians once faced and the breakthroughs that followed.

Younger recipients were celebrated as well. Van Wilson, preparing to go to college this fall, met the unrelated donor who provided the lifesaving cells found through the national registry; that donor traveled to Duarte to connect with him for the first time. Dr. Nicole Cross and other physicians emphasized that advances in conditioning regimens, supportive care and donor matching have greatly increased transplant safety and made successful unrelated-donor transplantation more common.

City of Hope framed the anniversary as both a tribute to early pioneers and a recommitment to future innovation. Long-term survivors returned to encourage new patients, staff highlighted ongoing research goals, and the event underscored transplantation’s evolving role in treating blood disorders and certain cancers.
