Don And Patricia Hughes: Wife Donates kidney To Husband After Months On Dialysis

USA: Don Hughes received a life-saving kidney transplant from his wife, Patricia Hughes, following a grueling run of dialysis that made the couple confront the full weight of their nearly 50-year marriage. The living-donor operation took place March 1, 2025, after clinicians confirmed Patricia was a compatible donor.

Don’s kidney function declined over time until he spent three months on dialysis — three days a week, four hours a day — before his nephrology team advised that a transplant was the only long-term solution. For a couple who vowed to stand by each other through sickness and health, the prospect of a transplant reshaped those vows into a surgical plan.

Patricia endured the battery of evaluations that precede living donation and emerged as a rare match; medical literature places the odds of an unrelated match at about 1 in 100,000. She proceeded with surgery to donate a kidney to her husband; the procedure succeeded, and a year later their recovery has become a story of survival, sacrifice and renewed daily life.

Their case arrives during April’s Donate Life Month, when Allison Brouillette, executive director of Donate Life NC, underscores a statewide crisis: more than 4,000 North Carolinians remain on transplant waiting lists, and about 90 percent of them are awaiting kidneys. The Hugheses are now urging others to consider living donation as a way to shorten waits and transform lives.
