UNLV Student Union Hosts Donate Life Event To Boost Organ Donor Registration In Nevada

USA: The University of Nevada, Las Vegas turned its Student Union Plaza into a Donate Life hub this week as UNLV Police and the Nevada Donor Network sought to increase organ and tissue donor registration ahead of and during National Donate Life Month in April. The campus activation centered on educating students and staff about transplantation, the donation and procurement process, and how a single registered donor can change multiple lives.

The event blended outreach with incentives: free donuts, K9 meet-and-greets, and on-the-spot sign-ups aimed at removing barriers to registration. Organizers partnered with local police agencies and first responders to answer questions, dispel misconceptions about donation, and direct people to state options such as registering at the DMV. Nevada Donor Network staff staffed tables to guide attendees through the registration steps and the practicalities of donation and transplantation.

Organ donation metrics underscored the urgency behind the campaign: more than 108,000 Americans wait for an organ transplant, including roughly 700 people in Nevada, while more than 1.6 million Nevadans are already registered as donors. Federal data show about 13 people die every day in the U.S. waiting for a transplant, and another name is added to the national list every eight minutes. One donor can save up to eight lives and help heal dozens more through tissue transplantation.

Organizers said the campus push is part of a broader effort to increase awareness, simplify registration, and improve understanding of how donation supports transplantation and recovery across communities. By meeting students where they are, the drive aimed to translate awareness into immediate registrations and long-term increases in donor availability.
