Lylah Stineman Returns Home After Life-Saving heart transplant Following Iowa City ICU Stay

USA: Lylah Stineman, a student at Davenport West High School, has returned home after receiving a heart transplant in March following a January diagnosis of cardiomyopathy. Placed on the transplant list in January, she spent more than 70 days in an intensive care unit in Iowa City before being discharged with no signs of rejection, her family reports.

The transplant comes amid a family history of heart failure: her father, Scott Stineman, was diagnosed with the same condition a decade ago and remains on a waiting list for a new heart. Lylah’s rapid decline and subsequent transplantation underscored the narrow window patients often face when advanced cardiac care is required.

Friends, classmates and school staff described an abrupt shift from everyday high school life—pep band performances and routine visits—to the pressures of major surgery and prolonged hospitalization. Lylah’s parents say she plans to return to Davenport West this fall, and clinicians will continue outpatient follow-up to monitor the transplantation and recovery.

The Stineman family and the Quad Cities community have turned the experience into advocacy for organ donation, seeking to raise awareness about the impact transplantation can have on young lives and to encourage registration among potential donors. Local supporters say the case has galvanized interest in how organ donation and transplantation can save and extend lives.
