Friends Fulfill Man’s Wish To Donate Lungs, kidney, Bone And Tissue After MAID In Edmonton
WORLD NEWS – CANADA: John Maloney, an Edmonton man who lived with progressive sight loss and debilitating visual hallucinations, chose medically assisted death last Friday with the support of longtime friend Tom Langner. Maloney, who had completed an in-person residency at Royal Roads University in Victoria years earlier, had struggled with severe insomnia and distress for many years and pursued MAID after exhausting other options.
The day before his death he was assessed and told he could donate lungs, a kidney, bone and other tissues. Organ procurement teams carried out testing and preparation so those organs and tissues could be used for transplant and transplantation procedures aimed at saving and improving other lives. Friends and family described the donation as central to Maloney’s wishes to leave a legacy of help.
Maloney had confronted suicidal crisis two years ago and later learned Track 2 of MAID was available to him. The case comes as Alberta considers provincial changes that would restrict access to medically assisted death to people whose natural deaths are foreseeable within 12 months. Langner, who drove Maloney to the hospital and remained by his side through testing and preparation, said he supported Maloney’s autonomous choice.
Hospital staff and organ donation teams involved in the process were reported to have worked respectfully and carefully through testing and procurement protocols. The transplantation outcomes for recipients were not yet public, but those involved emphasized that Maloney’s donations will extend his impact and underscore the ethical and policy debates around MAID and organ donation in Canada.
