UW Health Pushes Collaboration With Organ Procurement Teams As US Faces kidney transplant Shortage
USA: UW Health is intensifying collaboration with organ procurement professionals and regional health systems to tackle a growing gap between donor supply and demand for transplantation. Across the United States roughly 108,000 people await organ transplants, about 90,000 of them for kidneys, and some 4,400 of those kidney candidates are in Illinois alone, underscoring a pressing need for more donated organs and coordinated procurement efforts.
Clinicians say the U.S. remains highly altruistic, with relatively strong rates of living-donor and deceased-donor donation, including recent cases involving donors older than 100 years. Yet advances in transplantation and broader donor eligibility have not closed the gap: demand outstrips organs available for heart, lung and abdominal organ transplants as well as kidneys, creating long waits and mounting clinical urgency.
Barriers to donation include active cancer treatment or other medical exclusions, but leaders point to logistics and timing — and the need for closer collaboration between hospitals and organ procurement organizations — as frequent practical obstacles. Care teams stress that saving and stabilizing patients is always the immediate priority; when survival or functional recovery is unlikely, donation can become part of a considered end-of-life plan.
UW Health officials say they are working to maximize donors’ wishes and ensure safe, effective procuring of organs by strengthening communication across hospitals and procurement teams, while educating clinicians and the public about transplantation pathways and eligibility. Resources and guidance are being shared through UW Health to help clinicians and families navigate options.
