USA: Ascension Sacred heart Bay kicked off Donate Life Month with a flag-raising ceremony Wednesday morning as hospital staff, families of organ donors and transplant recipients gathered to mark the impact of donation. The event included personal testimonials and community leaders highlighting transplantation as a lifesaving legacy.

Hospital officials said the number of registered organ donors has tripled over the last year, a trend Ascension hopes to sustain through outreach and education. Organ donation remains powerful: one deceased donor can enable up to nine lifesaving transplants, while tissue donation can restore health for more than 150 people. The program also emphasized living donation as another pathway to transform lives.

Local leaders shared firsthand experience. Franklin County Sheriff AJ Smith, who underwent a kidney transplant last September after his wife donated a kidney, attended to raise awareness. He launched a campaign distributing Donate Life challenge coins and blue-and-green badges; deputies in Bay County will wear the badges throughout April to promote donor registration.

The gathering highlighted stories of recovery: living donors and recipients described regained independence after transplantation, including freedom from dialysis and return to everyday activities. Hospital surgical leaders announced continued efforts to recruit donors, support donor families and expand community partnerships to keep the momentum going.
