Atul Agnihotri Builds Network Connecting Living Donors And Patients To Boost kidney Transplants

USA: Atul Agnihotri, a Sylvania man whose life was changed after a 2015 blood test revealed end‑stage kidney failure, has turned his own transplant into a crusade to expand access to kidney transplantation. After receiving a life‑saving kidney through a workplace connection, he left the corporate world and launched an effort—Kidneys for Communities—to link people in need with living donors and guide them through evaluation and surgery.

His campaign addresses a stark national reality: roughly 100,000 people are on the kidney transplant waitlist and typical waits run five to seven years. During that time many patients either become too ill to be transplanted or lose their lives; experts describe about a dozen deaths every day among those waiting for a life‑saving transplant. children and first responders are among the groups his program prioritizes.

Kidneys for Communities says it has helped hundreds of patients and supported thousands of potential donors from almost every state, offering free guidance to remove barriers to donation. The group emphasizes living donor transplantation—noting that about 96 percent of living donors are family members, friends or people with an affinity to recipients—and stresses that donors can usually live a normal life with one kidney. The organization assists with outreach, pairing, and navigating medical and logistical steps that often deter donors.

Agnihotri frames the work as community driven: building networks, educating families, and accelerating matches to shorten waits and increase successful transplantations. He credits routine blood work for saving his life and now aims to translate that luck into scalable, donor‑driven solutions so more patients reach the operating table.
