Couple Start Transplant House To Support Michigan Families During Organ Transplant Journeys

USA: Tracy received a donor heart after suffering three heart attacks and a stroke, ending a three-year wait for transplantation that restored his ability to be with his wife and grandchildren. His wife Holly is herself a liver transplant recipient, and together they launched Transplant House of West Michigan to provide affordable lodging and peer support for families traveling for organ and tissue transplantation.

The effort comes as 2,700 Michiganders remain on waiting lists for life‑saving transplants. Gift of Life Michigan and Grand Rapids Commissioner Lisa Knight used National Donate Life Month to spotlight the gap between need and access, and to thank hospitals and donor families. Corewell Health Butterworth Hospital recorded the most organ donors in the state in 2025, with 54 organ donors and 75 tissue donors reported.

Hospital leaders emphasize that clinical teams’ first duty is to save patients’ lives; procurement of organs is only considered when care teams confirm they can no longer provide benefit and with respect for families’ wishes. Transplant coordinators and donation organizations work to address common concerns and guide families through medical, ethical and logistical steps when donation is possible.

Tracy and Holly say the house aims to create community and reduce the financial strain of repeated trips for surgery and follow‑up. Michiganders can register as organ donors through their local Secretary of State office or through Gift of Life Michigan, which coordinates matching and procurement to support patients awaiting transplantation across the state.
