Kazakhstan’s Transplant Growth Fueled By Surge In Deceased Donation And New Procedures
WORLD NEWS – KAZAKHSTAN: Health authorities reported a striking rise in transplantation activity this year, with 294 procedures performed, surpassing last year’s total. Officials attribute the increase primarily to a jump in deceased-donor participation: the number of transplants from postmortem donors climbed from 24 to 68. Overall case composition for 2025 shows 226 operations sourced from living donors and 68 from deceased donors, signaling a marked shift in how organs and tissues are being procured and allocated.
kidney transplantation continued to dominate the program, accounting for 206 operations, of which 177 came from living donors and 29 from deceased donors. liver procedures numbered 59 in total, including 10 using organs from deceased donors. The program also recorded growth in less frequent transplant types: heart transplants rose to 15 cases, lung transplants to four, and corneal transplantation entered practice with 10 surgeries, reflecting an expanding clinical repertoire.
Officials at a Health Ministry meeting credited the upward trajectory to investments in infrastructure and capacity. The network of transplant centers has grown beyond seven sites, and the ministry emphasized that improved facilities and systems underpin recent gains. At present, 4,521 patients remain on organ waiting lists; despite that backlog, mortality among people awaiting transplants has fallen by 4.6 percent, a metric cited as evidence of gradual improvement in outcomes and access.
The health minister has ordered stepped-up regional monitoring, guaranteed emergency transport for donated organs, accelerated deployment of digital tools, and intensified public information campaigns to increase awareness of deceased donation. Authorities presented these measures as coordinated steps to broaden the range of transplantable organs, strengthen the role of postmortem donation, and sustain the momentum behind what they describe as a transforming national transplant program.
