WORLD NEWS – ITALY: A man from Santena Sannita in the province of Isernia survived a severe workplace accident in which his right hand was severed while operating a log-splitter. The patient, identified as Nicolino, recovered the detached hand at the scene, placed it inside his sweater, alerted his employer by phone and then, alone, drove himself toward help, managing the wheel with one hand and his foot.

He arrived first at the emergency department in Isernia and was subsequently transferred to Naples for specialist care. The hand surgery team at Pellegrini performed a reimplantation transplant on the right hand, undertaking delicate microsurgical work to restore the severed limb. Medical staff completed the reattachment operation and began the immediate postoperative course.

A little more than a month after the reimplantation surgery, Nicolino is reported to have his hand back and remains in a state of disbelief over the outcome. He conveyed deep appreciation for the surgeons who carried out the operation, explicitly thanking the hand surgery team at Pellegrini for their role in restoring the limb. His reaction has been marked by astonishment and gratitude rather than spectacle.

The episode highlights both the rapid chain of events from injury to specialized care and the surgical team’s technical achievement in a high-stakes reimplantation transplant. Nicolino’s presence of mind at the scene—retrieving the hand, protecting it, contacting colleagues and making his own way to medical attention—was central to enabling the surgical team to attempt and complete the reattachment. The patient and surgical team are presented with respect as the case moves into recovery following the successful transplant.
