WORLD NEWS – VIETNAM: A remarkable medical achievement unfolded on June 19 as doctors at Hue Central Hospital successfully performed four simultaneous organ and tissue transplant surgeries, including heart, liver, and cornea transplants. These life-saving procedures, made possible by a generous donation from a brain-dead donor in Ho Chi Minh City, were a race against time for the medical team as they worked tirelessly throughout the night to save critically ill patients.

The journey began on June 12 when the hospital received a vital call from the National Coordinating Center for Organ Transplantation regarding a 39-year-old man from Phu Yen who suffered severe brain trauma. Despite heroic efforts to save him, his family ultimately made the courageous decision to donate his organs. In a display of compassion and generosity, they allowed his heart, liver, and corneas to be harvested, setting the stage for multiple lives to be transformed.

Collaboration was pivotal, as the surgical teams from multiple hospitals—including the Central Hospital of the Army 108—rushed to retrieve the organs swiftly and effectively. The heart found a new home with a patient battling end-stage dilated cardiomyopathy, whose life had been hanging by a thread with frequent cardiac arrests. Meanwhile, a 16-year-old boy with congenital biliary atresia received the donated liver, offering him a second chance at life as he resumed eating just six days post-surgery.

In addition, two patients suffering from corneal dystrophy had their sight restored through cornea transplants. The dazzling success of these surgeries has instilled hope and gratitude among the families involved, highlighting the profound impact of organ donation in the community. As recovery continues, doctors celebrate not just the technical achievements, but the whispered promise of new beginnings for those who once faced despair.
