HYDERABAD: Over the last one month, the third lung transplantation
was recorded in Hyderabad on Saturday, after the family of a brain dead patient
at Apollo hospitals
agreed to donate the organs. While this was the first organ donation
in the last two months in the state, the two lung transplants done prior to this were done by airlifting the organs from Kolkata and Pune.
While the state Jeevandan officials have been actively involved in getting donors, there has been a few months when no donations happened in the state. “This is a donor from our own state and this is the first donation happening after two months. With this donation two kidneys, one lung, one liver was donated while in the previous cases we had two lungs coming from other states since they did not have recipients for lung transplant in their state, so we got the offer. We have had no donations in April, July and August months,” said Dr Swarnalatha, in-charge Jeevandan Telangana
Meanwhile, the latest lung transplantation has given a new lease of life to a 53-year-old patient at Kims Hospitals. The organ was transferred through a 11 kms green channel given by the city Traffic Police in 8 minutes. While the donor was 43-year-old who has a road traffic accident and was declared brain dead, the recipient was patient suffering from Interstitial Lung Disease (ILD).
