Michaela Stokes Lawrence, Three-Time Heart Transplant Recipient, Overcomes Rejection Setbacks With Partner’s Unwavering Support

Michaela Stokes Lawrence Undergoes Third heart transplant After Rejection, COVID Setbacks

USA: Michaela Stokes Lawrence has lived with a congenital malformation of the right side of her heart first identified at age 16. Active during her youth, her condition gradually worsened over years until surgical intervention became necessary. The trajectory of her care has been punctuated by repeated crises and difficult recoveries that brought her back to the operating theatre more than once.

Her first heart transplant took place on New Year’s Eve 2019, but that donor organ was rejected by her body, prompting a second transplant in July 2021. Early after the second procedure she suffered a serious bout of COVID-19, and clinicians concluded the transplanted heart never fully recovered from that post-operative illness. Those complications culminated in a third heart transplant as the next step in managing her recurrent organ failure.

Throughout the series of operations and setbacks a close personal relationship emerged as a steadying force. Adam Purdue, her boyfriend, became a consistent source of support, documenting her cheerleading competitions so she would not miss events while hospitalized and providing day-to-day care when she was able. She disclosed her medical history to him very early in their relationship and he committed to standing with her through the long journey of repeated transplants and recoveries.

Michaela has relied on personal faith and an approach of taking recovery one day at a time. The case centers on serial heart transplantation, repeated organ rejection, and the added complication of COVID-19 after transplant—elements that shaped the course of her treatment and the role of close personal support in her ongoing care.
