Regional Hospital Performs First Multiorgan Transplant of 2026 After Donor Family Consent

WORLD NEWS – MEXICO: A coordinated transplantation operation at the Hospital Regional de Alta Especialidad Gustavo Arro Virosa Pérez marked the first multiorgan transplant of 2026 after the family of an 18-year-old with a confirmed diagnosis of brain death authorized organ donation. Federalized IMS Bienestar authorities said the decision opened the door to save and improve multiple lives on waiting lists, and triggered established medical protocols for procuring and allocating organs and tissues.

The procurement operation distributed organs and tissues across specialized centers: both kidneys were flown to IMS Bienestar Ciudad Salud’s regional high-specialty hospital, the liver was transferred to the Hospital de Especialidades at the Centro Médico Nacional de Occidente del IMS, corneas were delivered to the cornea bank in the State of Mexico, and bone and skin graft materials were sent to the Novo Injerto tissue bank. Hospital coordinators emphasized that the transplant and tissue procurements followed strict medical criteria and legal protocols, and that the donation team provided continuous, respectful guidance to the donor’s family throughout the process.

IMS Bienestar officials highlighted institutional experience: the regional hospital has participated in more than 120 living-donor-to-recipient transplants and, over the past four years, carried out six multi-organ procurements and eight tissue procurements. Hospital staff and donation coordinators noted the decision to donate was made after medical counseling and family discussion, underscoring the personal and deliberative nature of organ donation. The coordinated transfers and rapid surgical scheduling aimed to maximize the clinical value of each organ and tissue, advancing transplantation efforts and providing new opportunities for patients awaiting transplants.
