WORLD NEWS – INDIA: India has achieved a remarkable milestone in healthcare, completing over 18,900 organ transplants in 2024—the highest in a single year. This groundbreaking achievement was announced by Health Minister JP Nanda during the 15th Indian Organ Donation Day celebration in New Delhi, organized by the National Organ and Tissue Transplant Organization (NOTTO). This surge in transplants highlights the country’s rapid progress in organ donation and transplantation, a vital area of medical advancement that aims to save lives.
Since launching the Aadhaar-based online pledge platform in 2023, more than 330,000 citizens have stepped forward to pledge their organs. This shift marks a dramatic change in public perception and participation, a leap from fewer than 5,000 transplants just a decade ago. With India now ranking third globally in total organ transplants—trailing only the US and China—this emphasizes the country’s commitment to addressing organ shortages and saving lives.
At the event, Minister Nanda termed organ donation as “one of the noblest acts of humanity,” urging citizens to combat misconceptions and misconceptions surrounding organ donation. The Indian government has also introduced various financial support measures to assist patients, providing up to 1.5 million rupees for transplants and ongoing post-operative aid for impoverished individuals.
The rising number of kidney transplants is particularly noteworthy, with policies under the Ayushman Bharat PM Jan Arogya Yojana making transplantation more accessible. The government’s efforts signify a new dawn for organ donation in India, aiming to turn the tide in a battle against the long-standing issues of organ scarcity and misinformation, showcasing a concerted effort to save lives through the power of transplantation.
