Grant Freeze, 16-Year-Old Nicolet High School Swimmer, Will Donate Organs After Crash

USA: In Whitefish Bay and Mequon, Wisconsin, 16-year-old Nicolet High School swimmer Grant Freeze went from elation at his first statewide meet to tragedy in hours. A celebrated athlete known for a broad smile and a fist raised in victory, Grant had been reveling in a milestone performance in February when a devastating crash changed everything.

Police say Grant veered into the path of a dump truck near Pioneer Road and North Klug Lane in Mequon. Medics airlifted him to Froedtert Hospital, where he was placed on life support for two days. Family members described frantic phone calls and the slow arrival of grim updates, and on Friday his mother and loved ones decided to remove life support as physicians determined his injuries were unsurvivable.

Grant had earlier registered as an organ donor, and his family moved forward with the donation process. That decision put transplantation at the center of this loss: Grant’s organs and tissues will be evaluated and matched so that recipients can receive lifesaving transplants. Medical teams and organ procurement coordinators coordinated with the family as the process advanced, ensuring that Grant’s prior choice to donate could give others a chance at renewed life.

The community response was immediate and reverent. Coaches, teammates and school officials remembered Grant as generous and selfless, first to celebrate others’ successes and quick with a high five. Teammates recalled he would celebrate others’ qualifying cuts and personal bests, always offering encouragement after races and practices. Family and school are planning memorial gatherings this week. Through donation and transplantation, Grant’s legacy will extend beyond the pool, transforming grief into hope for strangers he will now help to save.
