Aaron Seghetti, Teacher Who Received Liver Transplant, Founded Nationwide Victory Day For Kids With Disabilities

USA: Victory Day erupted at Woodhaven High School and across Metro Detroit as 14 Downriver high school football teams united to stage an unforgettable game for about 70 kids with disabilities. Rival jerseys mixed on the same sideline as marching bands and cheer squads packed the stands. With the pomp and pageantry of a real football contest, players, coaches and families celebrated touchdown runs, high fives and the sheer joy of competition built to honor these young athletes.

Aaron Seghetti, a Trenton middle school science teacher and former football coach, launched Victory Day 15 years ago after battling cancer multiple times and receiving a life saving liver transplant. Seghetti turned his survival and gratitude into a mission. He wanted to give back, creating a day where children with disabilities are front and center. His experience with transplant and recovery inspired a celebration that combines sport, dignity and community service.

Since its modest start the event has blossomed into something much larger, celebrated at high schools and colleges across the country and reaching thousands of volunteers, players and spectators. Organizers say the program teaches empathy to student athletes and the wider school community by asking rivals to join forces so special players can shine. The sight of bands, cheerleaders and coaches rallying together underscored a powerful lesson about inclusion, respect and the value of every participant.

This year’s Victory Day again honored resilience and the transformative impact of one teacher’s recovery from cancer and transplant. Coaches emphasized that it is more about the children than the score, and families beamed as their kids were celebrated. Organizers encouraged teams and families to take part next year, ensuring that transplantation, survival and service continue to fuel this unique and joyous athletic tribute.
