Local Father On kidney transplant Waitlist Battles Time While Community Steps Forward

USA: Joseph Beverly has spent 15 months on a kidney transplant waitlist, a stretch marked by repeated hospital stays and long periods when basic tasks become a struggle. The transplant process sits at the center of his life now: he has been hospitalized three times since last August and endures many days confined to bed as he waits for a compatible kidney to become available.

Community members have rallied behind Beverly. Eleven people have volunteered to be kidney donors on his behalf, many drawn from his church, though medical screening found none to be a viable match. That outpouring of offers, coupled with family support, has been a sustaining force as he navigates the uncertainty of transplantation and the lengthy wait thousands of others also face for kidney replacement.

Beverly has turned the waiting period into purposeful time. He continues to help raise his daughters—attending basketball games and father‑daughter events—and has enrolled at West Virginia Junior College to pursue an associate degree in business administration. The education and family focus are deliberate efforts to remain active and hopeful while awaiting a transplant.

Medical leaders emphasize that potential living donors undergo extensive evaluation to ensure safety and compatibility. Dr. Karim Solomon, medical director of kidney transplant at UPMC Presbyterian, urged people not to be deterred by fears, noting that many are unaware they can serve as living donors and that thorough screening is standard practice. Beverly is urging the public to consider living donation to help him and the countless others on the kidney transplant list, framing the choice as a profound act of generosity that can change lives.
