Advocates Rally In South Portland To Promote Organ Donation And Transplantation

USA: Advocates, donor families and medical coordinators convened in South Portland as National Donate Life Month concluded to press the urgency of organ and tissue transplantation. The event at Bernie and Phil’s was hosted by New England Donor Services and framed around the life-saving work of organ procurement, transplantation logistics and community education.

New England Donor Services reported it coordinated more than 600 donations last year, a figure organizers used to underscore persistent demand. The group noted that since 2020 the number of transplants has risen by roughly 65 percent, a jump presenters linked to both improved referral systems and growing public awareness.

Speakers highlighted living kidney donation as a critical pathway to expand the donor pool, explaining that a healthy person with two kidneys can choose to donate one to someone in need and dramatically reduce waiting times. The program emphasized transplant outcomes, donor-recipient matching, and the role of hospitals and transplant centers in supporting both living and deceased donation processes.

Organizers closed with practical steps for residents who want to help: Maine residents can register interest through a form on Maine.gov. Event leaders framed donation not as an end in itself but as a way for people to leave a medical legacy and give patients a tangible chance at life through transplantation.
