Valley Center Team Dedicates Season After Local child‘s Organ Donation Enables Teen’s heart transplant

USA: Valley Center High School’s baseball team has dedicated its season to a local boy whose family’s decision to donate his organs gave new life to a 13-year-old heart transplant recipient from Pennsylvania. Jason Jones, who passed away unexpectedly in 2024 from meningitis and sepsis, became a donor whose organ procurement benefited four people, including the teen known as Luka.

Luka arrived on the transplant list in 2023 after a childhood marked by hypoplastic left heart syndrome and three open-heart surgeries before age three. After roughly 92 days of waiting, the teen received a heart transplant; community fundraisers then paid to fly Luka and his family to Kansas so they could meet the donor family and participate in local events honoring Jason’s legacy.

In Valley Center, players and fans adopted the season hashtag Love Big Like Jay, raised money for travel costs, and invited Luka and his family onto the field for a ceremonial first pitch. Surrounded by classmates and members of Jason’s community, the families exchanged gifts, met for the first time, and later commemorated the connection with matching tattoos of Luka’s heartbeat, symbolizing the human continuity created by transplantation.

Family members said the decision to donate was driven by a desire to give other families more time and memories. The unfolding of organ procurement into successful transplantation and community solidarity underscores both the lifesaving reach of donation and the lasting bonds it can forge between strangers.
