MEXICO: Historic 27 Organ Donations Achieved at Instituto Mexicano del Seguro Social’s Cancún Hospital in 2024

The Mexican Social Security Institute in Quintana Roo has achieved a groundbreaking milestone in its organ and tissue donation program, concluding 2024 with a record 27 donations. This remarkable achievement was facilitated by the General Regional Hospital No. 17 in Cancún, marking the highest number since the program’s inception nearly a decade ago.

Dr. María Cristina Ramos Hernández, the director of Hospital No. 17, highlighted the year’s success with two significant multi-organ donations, including skin and bone tissues. These donations have profoundly benefited numerous patients, enhancing their quality of life. As the program approaches its 10th anniversary in 2025, Dr. Ramos revealed plans to honor the families who have played a crucial part in this altruistic effort over the years.

The tally of 27 donations in 2024 surpasses the 26 accomplished in 2023, solidifying the institute’s commitment to organ procurement in Quintana Roo. Notably, Hospital No. 17 is the only certified facility in the state authorized to perform such critical procedures, underscoring its pivotal role in the healthcare sector.
