Urbandale Heart Recipient Hopes To Give Back During Donate Life Month

T
WILL HAPPEN.
744 NOW NEW, THIS MORNING, AN
URBANDALE MAN AND HEART
RECIPIENT HOPES TO GIVE BACK
WITH HIS STORY BY ENCOURAGING
OTHERS TO BECOME AN ORGAN DONOR.
IT IS JUST IN TIME FOR DONATE
LIFE MONTH.
JIM TAYLOR ENJOYS HIS TIME IN
RETIREMENT, CAMPING WITH HIS
WIFE JOYCE, BUT THAT WASN’T
ALWAYS POSSIBLE.
I GET TO THE MAILBOX AND TAKE A
BREAK AND THEN TURN AROUND AND
WALK BACK.
IT JUST IT JUST BECOMES HARD TO
DO THINGS.
HE SUFFERED FROM HEART FAILURE
FOR YEARS IN 2020, TAYLOR SPENT
MORE THAN 100 DAYS IN THE
HOSPITAL, ALL IN NEED OF A NEW
HEART.
THEY FOUND A MATCH, AND IN 2021,
HE WENT INTO SURGERY.
IT WAS KIND OF KIND OF LIKE
SOMEBODY FLIPPED A SWITCH.
I FELT A LOT BETTER REAL QUICK.
HE FELT BETTER, BUT HE KNOWS
ANOTHER FAMILY IS GRIEVING THE
LOSS OF THEIR LOVED ONE.
AND BECAUSE OF PRIVACY, PEOPLE
DON’T ALWAYS FIND OUT WHO THEIR
DONOR WAS.
HE DID.
KENNEDY WAS ONLY 18.
KENNEDY BELL’S THE TWO FAMILIES
MET UP AND CREATED A SPECIAL
BOND.
AS TAYLOR GOT TO KNOW HIS HERO.
IT’S BEEN A REAL A VERY
REWARDING EXPERIENCE FOR ME.
NOW HE’S PAYING IT FORWARD AS A
VOLUNTEER AT THE IOWA DONOR
NETWORK.
HE WANTS PEOPLE TO UNDERSTAND
THAT CHECKING THE BOX TO BECOME
A DONOR CAN MEAN SO MUCH.
YOU NEVER KNOW WHEN IT MAY
BENEFIT YOU OR OR SOMEBODY ELSE.
IT HAS BEEN THREE YEARS SINCE
THE TRANSPLANT.
TAYLOR, WHO’S NOW 68, GETS TO
ENJOY MORE TIME OUTDOORS WHILE
CARRYING ON KENNEDY’S LEGACY
WITH HER HEART.
LET’S NOW TAKE A LOOK AT THE
NUMBERS RIGHT NOW, ABOUT 1.6
MILLION IOWANS ARE REGISTERED
DONORS.
THAT IS ABOUT HALF OF OUR
STATE’S POPULATION.
BUT THE NEED IS GREAT.
THE IOWA DONOR NETWORK SHARES
THAT 617 IOWANS CURRENTLY ARE
LOOKING FOR AN ORGAN TRANSPLANT.
OTHER EFFORTS FROM THAT
ORGANIZATION INCLUDES HONORING
DONORS AND THEIR FAMILIES.
THIS MEMORIAL WALL YOU SEE HERE
IS IN THE ALTOONA OFFICE, AND
IT’S FULL OF FACES AND STORIES
OF PEOPLE WHO GAVE THE GIFT OF
LIFE.
THESE SQUARES ARE ALSO A WAY TO
HELP FAMILIES HEAL.
WE SEE IT A LOT WITHINTHIN OUR R
FAMILIES THAT THAT AIDS IN THEIR
GRIEVING PROCESS.
AND THE POINT TO WHERE, YOU
KNOW, IT DIDN’T WORK OUT FOR
THEM.
AND THEIR LOVED ONE, BUT THEY
SEE THE LEGACY THAT THEIR LOVED
ONES LIVING ON THROUGH SOMEONE
ELSE.
AND IT JUST REALLY HELPS THEM
PUSH THROUGH EACH PERSON CAN
DONATE UP TO SIX ORGANS, BUT
WHAT’S INTERESTING ABOUT THIS IS
CERTAIN ORGANS CAN ACTUALLY HELP
MULTIPLE PEOPLE.
