Dr. Jaimie D. Nathan, Chief of Pediatric Abdominal Transplant and Hepatopancreatobiliary Surgery at Nationwide Children’s Hospital, exemplifies excellence in pediatric abdominal transplantation. With extensive expertise in liver, kidney, and intestinal transplants, Dr. Nathan utilizes advanced techniques such as split livers, reduced-sized grafts, and living donor liver transplantation to optimize patient outcomes and reduce wait times. His proficiency extends to kidney transplants in very young children and caring for neonates needing dialysis, in collaboration with nephrology specialists.
Dr. Nathan is also a world-renowned surgeon for total pancreatectomy with islet autotransplantation (TPIAT), a procedure that offers hope to children suffering from severe pancreatitis. This advanced procedure, supported by a leading pancreatic islet isolation team, aims to help children achieve insulin independence and improve their quality of life.
Before his current role, Dr. Nathan held significant positions at Cincinnati Children’s Hospital, including surgical director of the Pancreas Care Center and the Kidney and Intestinal Transplant programs, as well as associate surgical director of Liver Transplant. His academic journey includes degrees from Yale University and extensive surgical training at Duke University and Cincinnati Children’s Hospital.
Recipient of the Nationwide Foundation Endowed Chair in Abdominal Transplantation, Dr. Nathan is deeply involved in research. He co-investigates the R01-funded POST Study, focusing on TPIAT, and works with INSPPIRE to enhance understanding and treatment of pediatric pancreatitis. His collaborations with basic science investigators include developing a patient-derived microfluidic pancreas-on-a-chip, furthering the understanding of pancreatic function.
