A study has found that a new therapy involving certain cells from a donor can help transplant patients avoid the need for lifelong drugs to prevent organ rejection. Scientists developed a technique that uses cells from the body’s immune system to reduce the likelihood of the immune system rejecting a transplanted organ. By receiving both the organ and the cells from the same donor, patients were less likely to experience rejection. The breakthrough comes after an eight-year-old girl in the UK successfully underwent a kidney transplant and no longer requires immunosuppressant drugs due to her immune system being reprogrammed after a stem cell transplant from the same donor.
