Wisconsin Rider Mark Scott Bikes Nearly 2,000 Miles To Raise Organ Transplant Awareness
USA: Mark Scott rolled into Rochester’s Peace Plaza this afternoon as part of a nearly 2,000-mile bicycle ride launched last month to raise awareness of organ transplantation and donation. The stop drew a community gathering where Scott outlined the personal and public stakes behind his campaign and the practical need for more donors.
Scott, who identifies as a living liver donor, said he has been doing these charity rides for about five years, covering roughly 12,000 miles across 24 states. He typically spends about a month each year on a route that traces the paths of transplant patients and donors; his campaign combines endurance cycling with local outreach and registration drives.
He presses hard on kidney transplantation in particular, citing data that about 25 people die every day while waiting for a kidney transplant and noting many others are removed from waiting lists before a match can be found. Scott and his team encourage both deceased-donor registration and living donation as solvable parts of the organ shortage, saying awareness and education can translate into lifesaving transplants.
Scott’s ride will continue through additional stops along its planned route, with community events aimed at informing potential donors about transplantation, living-donor options, and how to register. Organ transplant advocates at the gatherings urged those interested to contact local transplant centers or donor registries to learn more.
