Dr. Danny Kim, a pediatrician at Cook Children’s, has been diagnosed with advanced leukemia and is in urgent need of a blood stem cell transplant. His colleagues are seeking donors by conducting oral swab testing to find a match. The hospital has partnered with Be The Match to host two donor drive events where people can join the registry. Those who cannot attend the events can still become a donor by completing a digital form or texting Swab4Kim to 61474.
To be eligible, donors must be between 18-40 years old, in good health, and willing to donate to any patient in need. The most common method of collecting blood-forming cells is peripheral blood stem cell (PBSC) donation, while marrow donation is less common. After stem cells are collected, they are infused into the patient in need by IV to help their body create new bone marrow. Dr. Kim is a well-respected pediatrician who has served the Dallas area for 26 years.
