USA: Union Station’s Holiday Tree Honors Organ Donors, Spotlighting Transplant Families and Survival

USA: A seasonal installation at Union Station has become a public altar to transplantation and the people behind donation. On the second level, a cluster of white Christmas trees has been dressed in purple and green ornaments; among them are dozens of handmade decorations placed by families of organ donors. Many of those ornaments include images of the donors’ faces, turning the display into a gallery that names and remembers the individuals whose gifts enabled transplants.

The project is coordinated with the Midwest Transplant Network to bring donor families together during a period when grief can feel especially acute. Organ donation is presented as both loss and continuing life: organizers and participants described the display as a way to highlight who donors were and to create a place where families can find connection and community during the holidays. The installation remains in place through the new year and is located just outside the theater at Union Station.

Several families joined the memorial this season. Among them were Andrew Tran and his relatives, who were counted among the dozens honoring loved ones. Tran’s family was there to remember an uncle whose donation saved three people, and that story — repeated in multiple ornaments and remembrances — underscores the tangible lifesaving outcomes linked to transplantation even as it marks the absence felt by survivors.

Visitors said the tree can prompt practical and personal responses: beyond mourning, it inspires conversations about registering as a donor and about the ripple effects of donation. Organ donors are portrayed with dignity and the installation aims to support bereaved families while making the public face of transplantation visible during the holidays. The memorial stands as both tribute and invitation: a public, seasonal reminder of the lives saved and the communities that form in the wake of donation.
