Mount Sinai Surgeons Perform First Human Tracheal Transplant Surgery

A team of Mount Sinai surgeons led by Dr. Eric Genden has performed the first human #TrachealTransplant surgery. This historic case launched Mount Sinai’s Tracheal Transplant Program for treating patients worldwide, including those with severe intubation damage after #COVID19.

The 18-hour procedure involved a team of more than 50 specialists including surgeons, nurses, anesthesiologists, and residents.

Sonia Sein, the transplant recipient, had severe tracheal damage due to repeated intubation after an asthma attack; several failed surgical attempts to reconstruct her trachea led to even further damage.

She has had no complications or signs of organ rejection and doctors are monitoring her closely to assess her progress and reaction to antirejection therapy.

Disclaimer: Sonia was in an isolated, negative pressure ICU room. Patients are not always masked in these rooms. Sonia and the Mount Sinai staff are fully vaccinated.
