Midwest Transplant Network (MTN), an organ procurement organization (OPO), has been ranked among the top OPOs in the United States for the third consecutive year. The ranking, based on the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services’ performance reporting, placed MTN in Tier 1A and ranked it as the third highest-performing organization in terms of both donation and transplantation rates. MTN, a not-for-profit organization founded in 1973, facilitates organ, eye, and tissue donations in Kansas and western two-thirds of Missouri. It also provides additional services such as laboratory testing, tissue recovery, and support for donor families.
MTN has made improvements to increase kidney transplants by reviewing its donor management, recovery, and allocation processes. It aims to identify opportunities for improved data collection and analysis to ensure more people receive kidneys to improve their health and quality of life. In 2022, MTN facilitated 972 organ transplants, saved and enhanced lives through cornea and tissue donation, and conducted over 35,000 transplant-supporting tests. Furthermore, recent legislation passed by the Senate, the Securing the U.S. Organ Procurement and Transplantation Network (OPTN) Act, may impact the management of the OPTN by awarding multiple contracts to support its operation and eliminating the funding cap.
Overall, MTN’s ranking as a top OPO highlights its commitment to saving and enhancing lives through organ donation and transplantation. Its focus on innovation and improvement, as well as efforts to increase kidney transplants, demonstrates its dedication to making a positive impact on the communities it serves.
