In La Crosse, Wisconsin, a heartwarming event took place on World Marrow Donor Day, honoring the National Marrow Donor Program. Carl Shay, a stem cell recipient from La Crosse, was reunited with Craig Tom Seth from the Twin Cities, a courier who delivered Shay’s life-saving stem cells nearly a decade ago. This significant reunion underscored the impactful and human element of the donor program, emphasizing the volunteers’ dedication who ensure the delivery of vital donations. Special guests, including Timberwolves star Naz Reid, attended to show support and raise awareness for cancer treatment and the importance of donation.
So after Shay received his transplant, he too became a career stem cell courier, dedicated to helping other patients in need. During the event, Timberwolves star Naz Reid also emphasized the importance of the NMDP’s work in the fight against cancer. He applauded the selflessness of donors willing to undergo procedures to save lives and highlighted the rewarding nature of helping others.
Participants at the event, including medical professionals and former recipients, shared stories of survival and hope, underscoring the transformative impact of stem cell transplantation. They also called attention to the ongoing need for donors and the significance of raising awareness about the life-saving potential of such medical interventions. The gathering served as a powerful reminder of the resilience and compassion that drives the success of programs like the NMDP.
