The St. Charles wrestling team and community are showing their support for sophomore multi-sport athlete Braxton Wohlferd, who is currently in critical condition at the Mayo Clinic Hospital-Saint Marys campus. Wohlferd is awaiting a heart transplant after a virus attacked his heart, leading to his emergency room visit earlier this week. Tests have shown that a clot near or in his heart has become slightly smaller and he has started dialysis for his kidneys. Wohlferd’s family and friends have set up a GoFundMe page, which has raised over $67,000 to help with medical expenses. The wrestling team and community have rallied around Wohlferd, with a candlelight vigil held at a local church to pray for his recovery.
Wohlferd had been wrestling and feeling fine, but suddenly started experiencing symptoms. He was rushed to the emergency room, where doctors discovered the virus attacking his heart. Complications have also arisen, including compartment syndrome in his legs and possibly his arms, which restricts blood flow. However, there have been some positive signs, such as the clot becoming smaller and Wohlferd following commands. The community is hopeful for a successful heart transplant for Wohlferd and continues to support him and his family during this difficult time.
