Life-saving ‘Domino’ heart surgery performed on two baby girls at NYC hospital

A domino transplant surgery has been successfully performed on two babies, Mia Skaats and Brooklyn Civil, who were both born with heart-related issues. Mia received a heart transplant due to her heart failure, while Brooklyn needed a partial transplant to replace a missing heart valve. In a unique twist, Mia was able to donate a heart valve to Brooklyn during the domino transplant procedure. This marks the first time such a surgery has been performed in babies. Both families are grateful for the opportunity, with the Skaats family describing it as a special moment to give to another family after experiencing the gift of a heart transplant themselves. The families are now connected, and one of the nurses remarked that Brooklyn will always have a piece of Mia’s heart.
