Dr. Joseph Magliocca has been appointed as the director of the Vanderbilt Transplant Center and surgical director of the Pediatric Liver Transplant Program. A board-certified surgeon specializing in liver transplantation, Magliocca previously worked at Emory University School of Medicine and was responsible for the adult Liver Transplant and Living Donor Liver Transplant programs at the Emory Transplant Center. He also served as the surgical director of the pediatric Liver Transplant Program at Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta. In his new role, Magliocca aims to deliver the highest quality organ transplant care to all patients, advance the academic mission of the Transplant Center, and maintain a positive work environment.
This appointment is seen as a significant addition to Vanderbilt’s Transplant Center. Dr. Magliocca brings extensive clinical experience and a vision to expand services in patient care, research, and education. His research interests include pediatric liver diseases, organ preservation, ischemia/reperfusion injury, and the management of immunosuppression in transplant patients. He also plans to focus on expanding the use of machine perfusion to improve the preservation of donor organs and increase the number of organs available for transplant. Additionally, Dr. Magliocca aims to enhance access to Vanderbilt’s transplant services for historically underrepresented patients. Vanderbilt is confident that Dr. Magliocca’s expertise and experience will lead the Transplant Center into a new era, ensuring that their programs in organ transplantation remain at the forefront nationally.
