Ben, an 18-year-old who has overcome a rare liver disease and received a liver transplant at Boston Children’s Hospital, will be running alongside the hospital’s team in the Boston Marathon. Diagnosed with biliary atresia at just 9 weeks old, Ben underwent a kasai portoenterostomy to delay the need for a liver transplant. However, after 13 healthy years, he eventually required the transplant. Following a successful transplant and a speedy recovery, Ben was able to return to playing soccer. Now, in gratitude for the care he received, he will be participating in the Boston Marathon to raise money for the hospital.
During his time in the hospital, Ben faced challenges and spent four months as an inpatient due to acute liver rejection. He credits Dr. Heung Bae Kim, Dr. Scott Elisofon, and the nurses and technicians at Boston Children’s for keeping him positive and supporting him through his health journey. After receiving successful treatment and reversing the liver rejection, Ben wanted to give back to the hospital that saved his life. Participating in the Boston Marathon, raising funds for the hospital, and running alongside other former patients, families, and doctors is his way of expressing gratitude. Ben’s parents are incredibly proud and supportive of his participation in the marathon, as they have witnessed his resilience and determination since he was a baby.
