Overland Park Cancer Survivor Urgently Seeks Kidney Transplant

A 6-year-old boy from Overland Park, Kansas is urgently in need of a life-saving transplant. Owen, who has spent most of his young life in and out of the hospital, was first brought to the attention of the community three years ago when they rallied together to support him and his family through a fundraiser. Today, Owen’s mother Kathleen Cigich reveals that he was born with a kidney disease, and at 4 years old, doctors discovered liver cancer, hepatoblastoma, during an evaluation for a transplant. Despite undergoing chemotherapy, Owen has thankfully been declared cancer-free at the age of six. Yet, the family is now back on the search for a kidney donor as they seek to improve Owen’s quality of life, enabling him to eat normally and carry out daily activities without the aid of medical devices.

Owen remains optimistic, stating that he feels better and is eager to enjoy playing even more. However, Cigich stresses that finding a kidney donor is crucial. The family is specifically looking for a person between the ages of 18 and 50 with type O blood, who is in good health. Working closely with KU Health Systems, they are encouraging potential donors to reach out at (913) 588-1227 and mention their interest in supporting Owen Cigich. The Overland Park community came together once before, and now they hope to unite once more to find a miracle donor who can transform Owen’s life.
