New York Teacher Donates Liver to Student, Gains National Recognition and Dream Super Bowl Trip

Ezra Tok, a vibrant 5-year-old despite his ailing health, faced a grim diagnosis of end-stage liver disease. His survival hinged on finding a liver transplant donor. Unknown to him, his life-saving donor was someone from his past. The donor, Carissa Fiser, was Ezra’s former preschool teacher. Driven by a sense of duty, Carissa took it upon herself to undergo the arduous process of becoming a living donor. In a touching gesture, she revealed her intention with balloons and a sign, declaring herself a perfect match for Ezra.

In the summer, Carissa and Ezra journeyed to a hospital in New York City where the liver transplant surgery was successfully conducted. Carissa dedicated six weeks of recovery in New York City, while Ezra remained hospitalized for 45 days before he was finally able to leave the confines of the hospital in September. The remarkable act of altruism not only saved Ezra’s life but also marked a significant chapter in Carissa’s life who expressed great satisfaction at being able to make such an impact.

Months later, this heartwarming saga took a joyous turn. Carissa, Ezra, and his family found themselves reunited in New York City under happier circumstances. In a moment orchestrated by GMA 3 on ABC, NFL Hall of Famer Thurman Thomas, representing the Buffalo Bills and Highmark, honored Carissa’s selfless act. As a token of appreciation, they gifted her and Ezra tickets to the Bills playoff game at Highmark Stadium, with a surprise trip to New Orleans for Super Bowl 59.

The events culminating in this celebration highlight the profound impact of selflessness and generosity, showcasing the life-changing potential that human empathy and courage can achieve. Through one brave deed, Carissa didn’t just offer life to Ezra, she also restored hope and rekindled connections that had once seemed fleeting.
