In a remarkable display of dedication, cardiothoracic surgeon Dr Sanjeev Jadhav continued with a scheduled lung transplant surgery in Chennai after being injured in an accident near Pune. The doctor and his medical team were transporting harvested lungs from a hospital in Pune to Chennai when the ambulance they were in met with an accident. Despite suffering injuries, Dr Jadhav chose to prioritize the lifesaving surgical procedure and performed the transplant on a 26-year-old patient in Chennai, with the assistance of his team. The critical organ had a limited viability of six hours, making it crucial to transport it to Chennai for the surgery.
The accident occurred on Monday evening when the ambulance collided with a bridge railing, resulting in significant damage to the vehicle. Dr Jadhav sustained injuries to his head, hands, and knee, while other members of his team also suffered injuries. Undeterred, they quickly transferred the harvested organ to another vehicle and reached the airport, where a chartered plane was waiting. They successfully completed the lung transplant surgery upon arriving at Apollo Hospitals in Chennai, providing the patient with a new lease on life.
