Jade Ward, a seven-year-old girl with Fanconi anaemia, a rare genetic disease that affects bone marrow and the production of blood cells, has celebrated her birthday after battling the disease for the past three years. Last year, a blood donation day was organized to support Jade, who was in the hospital at the time. Jade underwent a stem cell transplant, but experienced complications with Graft-versus-host disease, where the donor marrow attacked her body instead of taking over. However, she pulled through and is now recovering well. Jade’s parents were told three years ago that she needed a stem cell transplant to save her life, which cost over R2 million. A fundraiser was held to cover the medical expenses.
Jade’s father said that she is now enjoying being a normal seven-year-old girl and has been back at school for a few weeks. Despite encountering a few minor setbacks, Jade is healthy and happy. The family is relieved to have her back home and recovering.
