Dr. Danny Kim, a pediatrician at Cook Children’s Hospital in Frisco, Texas, is in urgent need of a blood stem cell transplant after being diagnosed with leukemia. A social media push and a network of communication have been established to find a donor for Dr. Kim, who has dedicated over a decade to saving the lives of children. However, finding a suitable donor has proved challenging due to Dr. Kim’s Korean heritage, which has narrowed his donor pool. The hospital held a screening event called ‘Be the Match,’ where colleagues and the public showed up to get swabbed for potential matches.
The hospital has received an inspiring show of support from the families of children who are patients at the facility. One mother, Caroline Poe, whose son lives with autism and other challenges, stated that when the hospital calls for support, her attitude is a simple ‘yes,’ as the hospital serves their community so well. Dr. Matthew Dzurik, president of Cook Children’s Physician’s Network, emphasized that a bone marrow transplant is crucial for Dr. Kim’s well-being and stressed the importance of opening up the knowledge base to the wider DFW community. He highlighted that anyone can try to save a life, whether it’s for Dr. Kim or someone else, and that being a physician or medical provider is not a prerequisite for helping.
