KLE Society Hospital Achieves 12 Successful Liver Transplants in a Year

KLE Society’s Prabhakar Kore Hospital in North Karnataka has successfully performed 12 liver transplants in the span of a year. The recipients included patients from the Belagavi district, as well as cities such as Bengaluru, Kalaburagi, Hubballi, Haveri, and Hassan. The hospital was able to achieve this milestone due to the widespread awareness and support for organ donation in the region. Six of the livers were donated by the families of brain dead patients at the hospital, while the rest were received from donors at other hospitals in the area.

The hospital is the only one in North Karnataka equipped to handle liver transplants, boasting state-of-the-art infrastructure and specialized staff. Leading the efforts to promote organ donation are transplant coordinators Geeta S. Desai and Basavaraj Majati. The liver transplant team, headed by Santosh Hajare and surgeon Sudarshan Chaugale, has worked diligently to perform these surgeries successfully. Furthermore, the hospital also offers other organ transplant surgeries, including kidney and heart transplants, making it a prominent center for multiple organ transplants in the region.

With over 30 liver transplant recipients currently on the waiting list, the hospital is committed to raising awareness about the positive impact of organ donation. They are educating the public on how a single individual can save the lives of up to eight different people through organ donation, including their heart, liver, kidneys, pancreas, and lungs.
