Kidney transplant recipient narrates journey in observance of Donate Life Month

A kidney transplant patient named Jason Holliyan from Birmingham, Alabama, made the decision to donate his kidney to his brother, Jeff, in 2008 without any hesitation. However, 14 years later, Jeff had to undergo surgery to have the donated kidney removed due to the discovery of a tumor. The doctors at UAB determined that the kidney needed to be removed to prevent the spread of the tumor. As a result, Jeff has been relying on dialysis for the past two years. Jason reached out to a local radio station to share his brother’s story, which led to a woman offering to donate her kidney to Jeff. They are currently waiting for the test results to determine if the woman’s kidney is a match, and if successful, Jeff will receive a new kidney soon.

Legacy of Hope representative Ann Rayburn emphasized the importance of organ donation, stating that one organ can save eight lives, and one tissue donor can heal 75 people. She encouraged people to consider becoming organ donors throughout the year, not just during National Donate Life Month in April.
